Why It Matters
The outlet you see is rarely the problem.
Here's why this matters more than it looks: a burnt or warm outlet is a sign, not the problem itself. The heat that caused it is usually coming from a connection behind the device — in the wall, where you can't see it.

GFCI and AFCI aren't the same thing
Two different devices, two different jobs. Most homes want both — in different places.
Ground-Fault Protection
The outlet with test and reset buttons. It watches for power leaking somewhere it shouldn't — like through a person — and shuts it off in a split second.

Why does my outlet only work sometimes?
Almost always a loose connection. The wire behind the outlet isn't gripping tightly, so the power cuts in and out as things shift or heat up. Don't live with it — a loose connection makes heat, and that heat makes the connection worse over time.
Why is my switch plate or outlet warm?
Warm means the power is fighting to get through something, and that fight makes heat behind the wall. A properly working outlet should be cool to the touch. This is worth having looked at promptly rather than waiting to see if it gets worse.
What is a GFCI outlet and where do I need them?
A GFCI is the outlet with the test and reset buttons. It watches for power leaking somewhere it shouldn't — like through a person — and shuts it off in a split second. Code requires them anywhere water is nearby: kitchens, bathrooms, garages, laundry rooms, outdoors, and unfinished basements. If your older home doesn't have them there, that's a real gap.
What's the difference between GFCI and AFCI?
They do different jobs. A GFCI protects people from shock — it notices power going where it shouldn't. An AFCI protects the house from fire — it notices the sign of arcing and shuts the circuit off before it can start a flame. Most homes want both, in different spots.
My outlet is dead. Is it broken?
Not always. A dead outlet is often tied to a GFCI that tripped somewhere else — sometimes in another room. So the first thing to check is whether any GFCI in the house needs a reset. If that doesn't fix it, it's usually a loose connection or a tripped breaker, and it's worth having someone look.
Can I just replace an outlet myself?
We'd rather you didn't. The power is live, and the outlet you can see usually isn't the problem — the heat is behind it. Swapping it out often leaves the real cause sitting in the wall. This is a small job for a licensed electrician, and a real risk for anyone else.
I have two-prong outlets. Is that a problem?
Two-prong outlets have no ground. That means there's no safe path for power to go if something goes wrong, and no protection for your electronics. There are a few ways to fix it depending on your wiring — sometimes a GFCI, sometimes running a real ground. It's worth finding out which one your home needs.
Why do my plugs fall out of the outlet?
The metal contacts inside have worn out. It's more than annoying — a loose grip means a bad connection, and that makes sparking and heat right at that spot. Worn outlets are cheap to replace and worth doing.
